To develop a successful web site it is important to develop a presence or a web branding for yourself. In order to implement this branding you must determine several things.

Keep in mind that the average web shopper is better informed and better educated than the average person. They ask "What's in it for ME?" This is where you need to distinguish yourself from the average guy with a web site who has the site just to have a site. Educate your customer. Arm them with information that nobody else has.

Your Home Page
This page is the first page of your site and will make or break a successful site. It is your first impression. Hence, this is also your most expensive page.

The Three Click Rule
Web sites can be confusing and overwhelming. If there is not enough information a potential client may lose interest or not find what they are looking for (what's in it for me?) If there is too much information a potential client may become confused and disoriented or even take that information and go elsewhere to make their final purchasing decision. It is important to find that balance when developing your site. It is important that your site is easily navigable and viewers can find their way back to where they want to go.

Web sites reflect a personality. Be it the personality of the designer or the personality of the person or company the site represents. The financial service and Real Estate Industry is notorious for putting the agent's mug shot on every piece of literature it sends out. It is my opinion that this is an over used marketing tool that has become, well, cheesy. Your site should reflect you, your personality, and philosophy. The client can get a good idea of how you look by the appearance of your site and the information given in your site.

Search the internet using the various search engines using keywords you think a potential client might use. Bookmark sites that you like. Pay attention to the top 10-20 sites that appear. Make a list of these sites and the ones that you like
